What Stays and What Changes
- Painting changes the color while keeping suitable cabinet boxes, existing doors and the current cabinet arrangement.
- Refacing keeps sound boxes in place while changing doors, drawer fronts and the finish on exposed cabinet surfaces.
- Replacement changes the cabinet boxes and interiors, making room for different drawer storage or a revised cabinet arrangement within the existing kitchen.

Cabinet Condition Sets the Scope
| Option | Usually fits when | Usually does not fit when |
|---|---|---|
| Painting and refinishing | Boxes and doors are sound; their style and arrangement still work | Boxes are swollen or you dislike the door profile |
| Refacing | Boxes are sound and well arranged; different doors would solve the appearance problem | Cabinet interiors or box condition need substantial changes |
| New cabinets | Different storage, replacement boxes or another cabinet arrangement matter | The existing cabinets work and only their finish bothers you |
Cabinet condition and everyday use determine which option deserves a closer look. A faded finish does not automatically call for replacement. Soft material, swelling or dampness near the sink changes the conversation because a new surface cannot solve an ongoing moisture problem. Describe any marks or sticking drawers during the call.
Refresh Keeps the Boxes and Arrangement
| Choice | Settled first | Can wait |
|---|---|---|
| Paint or refinish | Whether the existing doors and surface suit the desired finish | Final color or stain sample |
| Reface | Whether the boxes and arrangement are worth keeping | Pull shape and decorative details |
Painting changes color; refinishing renews a suitable existing surface and may preserve visible wood grain. Both keep the boxes and arrangement, and normally keep the doors. For kitchen cabinets, refinishing depends on the surface material and condition of the old coating. Refacing replaces doors and drawer fronts and covers or finishes the visible box surfaces to match. Hardware changes should be included explicitly rather than assumed.
Update Pairs Kept Cabinets With New Surfaces
| Choice | Settled first | Can wait |
|---|---|---|
| Countertop update | Whether the retained cabinets suit the countertop plan | Final edge detail |
| Backsplash update | How the counter and cabinet finishes work together | Grout shade |
An Update adds counters or a backsplash to cabinets that stay. Discuss those surfaces alongside the cabinet finish so the choices work together. Cabinet refacing cost also depends on whether matching exposed ends, drawer fronts and hardware are included. A door-only comparison leaves important work out; ask for the same list of changes when comparing options.
Remodel Replaces Boxes and Storage
| Choice | Settled first | Can wait |
|---|---|---|
| New cabinets in the same arrangement | Drawer storage and cabinet sizes | Interior accessories |
| Re-plan within the existing kitchen | A cabinet arrangement that suits cooking and appliance use | Decorative door details |
Replacement lets you choose new boxes, interiors, doors and hardware. New cabinets can follow the existing arrangement; a Re-plan puts cabinets and appliances in different positions within the kitchen as it stands. If reaching into deep cupboards or opening adjacent drawers is the daily problem, show your remodeler how you use those spots. Compare cabinet installation with refacing around that need.
Household Planning Covers Dust and Finish Drying
Dust containment, ventilation and access during finish drying belong in the work plan. In a home kept shut during winter, ask how fumes will be managed and when finished surfaces can be handled. The EPA's Renovation, Repair and Painting rule generally applies to paid work disturbing painted surfaces in homes built before 1978 and requires lead-safe work practices. Mention the home's age during the call so paint disturbance is discussed.
After the work plan is agreed, clear counters and the floor in front of cabinets, and put breakables away. Keep children, pets and food outside the work area once work begins. A cooler or second refrigerator can hold food during lost kitchen access. Ask about dust protection and any interruption to water use.
Comparing Costs Starts With the Actual Cabinets
A useful cost comparison follows a conversation and an assessment of the cabinets, because door count alone misses surface preparation, damaged areas, exposed ends and drawer changes. Kitchen cabinets cost more to change when the scope includes new boxes and storage fittings as well as faces. One of our local kitchen remodelers will explain the chosen work and its price before work begins. Call with the cabinet problem; the finish decision can develop from there.
